Clubs actions under scrutiny

THE Scottish Government is poised to take action against members’ clubs claimed to be abusing the licensing system. The disclosure comes in a letter from the government to the manager of an Elgin bar, restaurant and bowling alley. Bowl 2000 complained to ministers that mainstream operators in Moray were losing trade unfairly to clubs which are effectively functioning as commercial businesses.

Maclay bidding to bounce back

MACLAY Inns has returned to profit and turnover growth in its current financial year – after a combination of continuing recession, poor weather and increased costs hit results in the 12 months to September 2011. The managed house operator, which runs 26 pubs across Scotland, saw operating profit fall 20% to £750,000 and turnover drop 2.2% to £10.4 million in its last full financial year.

Staycations drive growth in tourism

THE growing “staycation” phenomenon is continuing to boost Scotland’s tourism industry, offsetting a decline in the number of international visitors. The number of overnight domestic visitors to Scotland was up 10% in 2011, according to combined figures from the Office of National Statistics’ latest ‘overseas travel and tourism’ report and the Great Britain Tourism Survey, which charts the volume and value of overnight domestic tourism trips taken by Brits.
