We’ve won the battle on pricing
First Minister Alex Salmond confidently declared last week that drinks industry opponents to minimum pricing will now “come into line” after the measure received a massive boost in political support. The Westminster coalition is now consulting on a proposed 40p a unit minimum price as part of its new Alcohol Strategy, raising the prospect of the mechanism being introduced on both sides of the border.
Tennent’s takes Maclay beer deal
Tennent Caledonian Breweries (TCB) strengthened its grip on the Scottish lager scene last week when it secured a deal to become the main beer supplier for Maclay Inns. The Glasgow brewer is looking forward to driving sales of its core brands – Tennent’s lager, Caledonia Best ale and Magners cider – and other craft beers in Maclay’s 26 managed pubs after winning the deal from Belhaven.
Edinburgh move to cap off-sales comes under fire
Retailers have hit out at Edinburgh licensing board’s decision to introduce what they say is effectively a blanket cap on new off-sales licences across the entire board area. The board last week approved an amendment to its licensing policy statement, which states that “unless there are strong counter indications, any such [off-sales] application or variation will be viewed by the board as likely to be inconsistent with one or more of the licensing objectives”.
