Theco-ordinator of Dundee’s Best Bar None has signalled her support for the introduction of a UK-wide version of the bar safety awards scheme. Morag Beattie told SLTN it would be a natural progression to link up the national Best Bar None schemes on both sides of the border after the first Scottish awards were held this year.

Alex Salmond has called for the power to set alcohol duty in Scotland. Speaking in the Scottish Parliament after he was officially re-elected first minister, Salmond demanded control of excise duty north of the border. It’s one of a series of new powers the first minister wants handed to Holyrood. The demands will be outlined in the Scotland Bill, to go before Westminster.

Trade hit as city centre street stays closed
Operators in one of Glasgow’s busiest streets say trade has slumped after part of the road was closed more than three months ago following a fire. Bar and club owners have slammed the lengthy closure of Sauchiehall Street, between Charing Cross and Elmbank Street, which came into force after the blaze on February 8 and was still in place as SLTN went to press. Last week there was still no indication when the section of road was likely to re-open.
