Cail Bruich, one of only two Glasgow restaurants to currently hold a Michelin Star, has this week been given another plaudit – The Incorporation of Maltmen’s inaugural Best Restaurant Award.
First opened in 2006 by Chris & Paul Charalambous, Cail Bruich received that Michelin Star in 2021, just five months after Chef Lorna McNee joined the business from Restaurant Andrew Fairlie.
At that moment, McNee became the first female chef in Scotland to hold a Star and Cail Bruich the first restaurant in Glasgow to have one since 2004.
Now, as well as that Star and its three AA Rosettes, Cail Bruich can display its Best Restaurant plaque from the Incorporation of Maltmen, after it was presented to head chef David Scott by Maltmen Gordon McIntyre MBE, Roddy Young, and Willie Jones.
“We are absolutely delighted to have been selected to receive this award – what a beautiful plaque – that will be given pride of place in the restaurant,” said Chef Scott.

“It is a huge surprise to win this. A huge thanks to The Incorporation of Maltmen, what an amazing organisation, providing support to the city and the wider hospitality industry in Scotland.”
The Maltmen Visitor, Ian Gibson, said: “We are delighted to recognise Cail Bruich in Glasgow, a brilliant team in a Michelin star venue with an amazing menu, focussing on local produce.
“They are firmly established on the hospitality industry map in Glasgow as a destination both for locals and tourists to include on their visit to the city.”
The Incorporation represents an ancient craft which goes back to prehistoric times in Scotland, although it hit a heyday in 17th century when every town had its own maltmen or brewers.
One of the Incorporation’s founding principles was to support education in Glasgow, financed from its members’ entry fees, and fines on members who broke trading regulations, and to this day it presents annual awards for a student in brewing at Heriot Watt University, a hospitality management student at Strathclyde University, and a top hospitality student from The City of Glasgow College.
It also uses its funds to support needy pensioners and donates regularly to many other charities. To find out more about the Maltmen, and how to become a member, contact the Clerk to the Incorporation of Maltmen, Tom Monteith, on mailto:clerk@maltmenofglasgow.org
