THE George Hotel in Inveraray is in new hands after being acquired by hoteliers Charlie Maclachlan and Sam Wignell in a £3.05 million deal.

The George, a previous winner of both the SLTN Whisky Bar of the Year and SLTN Outdoor Area of the Year awards,  was placed in administration in March and the sale was handled by administrators Begbies Traynor, which continued to trade the business during the sale process.

Begbies Traynor said the sale has preserved 43 full and part-time jobs.

Maclachlan and Wignell will operate the hotel via their newly-incorporated company, Fyne Hospitality.

“The George Hotel is more than just a building, it’s the beating heart of Inveraray, steeped in character and beloved by locals and visitors alike,” said Maclachlan.

“With deep personal ties to the area and decades of combined experience in hospitality, we’re incredibly proud to take stewardship of this iconic institution.”

Wignell added: “Our vision is simple. Preserve the heritage, elevate the experience, and ensure The George remains a celebrated destination for generations to come. From its award-winning food, and vibrant pub atmosphere to its historic rooms and unbeatable setting on Loch Fyne, The George has all the ingredients of a world-class hotel.”

Thomas McKay of Begbies Traynor thanked previous owners the Clark family, who had owned and operated The George for 165 years, for ‘their contribution not only to Inveraray, but their openness and help with a challenging trading and sale process’.
