Top Sommelier qualifications for Highlands hospitality youngster

Caitlin Evans

At just 21 years old, Caitlin Evans, supervisor at Fort Augustus’ AA awarded 3 Rosette restaurant, Station Road, has ‘found her passion in the world of wine’ and achieved two top Sommelier qualifications.

Having started her coursework in July 2023, Caitlin has now earned the Introductory Master Sommelier qualification and WSET Level 2 – Distinction, with a whopping 100% pass, which her employers described as ‘an incredible achievement’.

The Station Road restaurant

The Station Road restaurant can be found at The Lovat, nestled in the heart of the Scottish Highlands on The Great Glen Way, the only 4-star hotel in the Fort Augustus area.

Led by Head Chef Sean Kelly, it claims to offer a dining experience like no other in the Scottish Highlands. Having worked across the globe in Michelin star restaurants, Sean’s ‘refined and innovative’ cooking champions local suppliers, focussing on what can be found on the doorstep or just a little further afield.

Caitlin is now looking forward to greatly enhancing Station Road’s guests’ culinary experiences by sharing her learnt wine knowledge.

She is also set to travel down to Newcastle in April for a stint at the Michelin-starred restaurant Pine, to work with its Head Sommelier, Vanessa Stoltz, and visit a local vineyard, giving her an opportunity to see the world of hospitality through the eyes of individuals who work with a similar purpose and vision.

The Lovat, in Fort Augustus

Having first been used as a hotel in 1869, The Lovat has long been a welcome comfort break for guests on their Scottish Highland adventures. A family business since 2005, it is now owned by Kelly and his wife Caroline Gregory.
