New MD for Glasgow’s WEST brewery

Sales director Matt Munro takes helm as founder Petra Wetzel steps back from day-to-day running

GLASGOW-based brewery and beer hall businesses WEST has appointed a new managing director after founder Petra Wetzel announced plans to step back from the day-to-day running of the company.

WEST’s sales director Matt Munro will take up the role of MD from Wednesday 1st September, assuming responsibility for the strategic, operational, sales and marketing functions of the business. Ashley Wilson, WEST’s finance director, and Ally Clem, WEST’s operations and people director, will continue to work with Munro in the senior management team.

Wetzel said she is stepping back from the day-to-day running of the brewery and beer hall business after 13 years at the helm to focus on other projects – both connected and unconnected to the core WEST business.

“I will retain my shareholding in the business and will continue to assist the team in an advisory capacity,” she said.

“I have long had an interest in angel investment, supporting women in business and ensuring younger people in Scotland reach their potential. This will provide the time to commit my energy to these causes close to my Gerwegian heart.

“Matt has been an integral part of the senior management team at WEST for the past five years and brings over 20 years’ experience working in senior sales and commercial roles in the Scottish licensed trade at Wallaces Express and C&C Group.

“We share a passion and vision for the future of the WEST business and I can think of no better person to lead the business in the years ahead. The senior team have all worked together for many years and we are firm believers in nurturing talent from within our own organisation. I couldn’t be prouder of the team at WEST today.”

Munro said: “Petra and the team have built an amazing brand and venue which I have been part of for the last five years and I am looking forward to supporting and leading the team on its journey over the coming years. As an independently owned Scottish business, we are in the wonderful position of being in control of our destiny and I look forward to seeing how far we can grow together.”
