Bartenders: are you World Class material?

BARTENDERS have one week left to enter the Diageo Reserve GB World Class Competition 2018.

Last year’s 11 finalists of Diageo’s World Class bartending competition, which included Jon Hughes of Edinburgh bar Bramble (second in from back left).

Entries for the worldwide contest, which last year saw Scottish bartender Jon Hughes of Edinburgh-based bar Bramble make it to the UK finals of the competition, opened last month (February 15) and will close a week today, on March 30.

The contest will commence with a digital submission of one serve – and will culminate with the bartenders from across the UK battling it out to be crowned GB World Class Bartender of the Year 2018.

This year, ‘The Resourceful Bartender’ and ‘Heat of the Moment’ are the two key elements at the centre of ‘The Closed Loop Cocktails’ entry challenge; the former focuses on “the significance of sustainability and resourcefulness, enabling bartenders to create a better bar, serve and working environment”, while the latter “hones in on flavour and experimentation, delving into culinary influences”.

Competitors looking to enter must submit one cocktail to Closed Loop Cocktails, which must comply with both of the above segments – executing sustainability and culinary technique. And the cocktail of choice must include at least 30ml of any Diageo Reserve spirit from the World Class portfolio, forming the foundation of the serve. The full recipe should be submitted online at TheWorldClassClub.com.
