Some of Edinburgh’s top foodies have united to support the Fuel for Success campaign tackling the problem of morning hunger amongst Scotland’s schoolchildren

Respected chefs and restaurateurs, Joseph, Ben and Abi Radford of Timberyard, Roberta Hall McCarron of The Little Chartroom, and Stuart Ralston of Aizle Hospitality Group, have joined forces with Magic Breakfast to help ensure children and young people start exam season with the nutrition they need to learn, focus and thrive.

Across Scotland, thousands of pupils arrive at school too hungry to concentrate, with teachers consistently reporting that morning hunger affects behaviour, confidence and the ability to learn before lessons have even begun.

The Fuel for Success campaign provides schools with nutritious breakfasts and calm, structured morning routines that help pupils feel ready for the day, especially during the pressure of exams.

These noted restauranteurs, each known for shaping Scotland’s modern food scene, are lending their voices to highlight the urgency of morning hunger and the difference a nourishing breakfast makes for young people.

Roberta Hall McCarron of The Little Chartroom said she felt compelled to get involved as both a chef and a parent: “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and every child should have access to this.

“As soon as I learnt about Magic Breakfast and all the great work they are doing, I knew I had to support in any way possible. As a chef and a mum, I believe that it’s vital to provide children with nutritious meals.”

For Joseph Radford of Timberyard, the issue speaks to the heart of his work: “Working with food daily, we are constantly reminded how much it matters. Supporting Magic Breakfast is about recognising that a basic meal shouldn’t be a privilege.”

Stuart Ralston of Lyla, echoed this sentiment, emphasising the long‑term impact of a simple morning meal: “As a chef, a father and a proud supporter of the Magic Breakfast’s Fuel for Success campaign, I believe that every child deserves the opportunity to start their day with a nutritious meal, it’s an investment in their future.”

Teachers across Scotland see the impact of morning hunger every day. As one teacher from an Edinburgh primary said:  “You can tell within minutes which children have eaten and which haven’t. Breakfast helps them settle, join in and feel more confident.”

And a pupil at a Glasgow secondary said: “When I have breakfast at school, I feel more awake and less stressed about my exams. It helps me focus and I don’t feel like I’m starting the day already behind.”

With Scotland’s exam season in full swing, Magic Breakfast is calling for greater awareness of the role morning nutrition plays in educational outcomes and for more support to ensure no child is held back because of hunger.

The participating restaurants – Timberyard, Montrose, The Little Chartroom, Eleanore, Ardfern and Lyla – will each be highlighting Fuel for Success during the exam period, helping raise vital awareness and encouraging donations so more pupils across Scotland can start their day nourished and ready to learn.

“By choosing to dine with these Edinburgh restaurants, the public can play a direct role in supporting children at a crucial moment in their education,” said organisers. “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and every child should have access to this.”
