Following the success of his south-side restaurant Angeethi, award-winning chef Sagar Massey is to open his first Glasgow city centre restaurant – Kalinga, on West Regent Street.
Within just six months of opening Angeethi, Massey and his team were awarded a Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand ‘in recognition of outstanding food at exceptional value’, becoming the first and only Indian restaurant in Scotland to receive that distinction.
Now, in a site that was formerly home to Grilled by Ajay Kumar, he is launching Kalinga, promising a journey through the ‘rich heritage and vibrant flavours’ that have inspired him throughout his career.
“Opening a restaurant in Glasgow city centre has been a long-held ambition of mine. Glasgow has a fantastic reputation for Indian cooking, and I’m proud to become part of that story.
“At Kalinga, we want to bring together the flavours, spices and cooking traditions that have inspired me throughout my life and career. Our approach is rooted in authentic Indian cooking, but we also want to present it with our own identity, precision and creativity.
“We believe Kalinga will offer something distinctive to the city centre while still celebrating the depth and diversity of Indian cuisine.”
On the menu will be a range of familiar curries with some signature dishes, including yogurt kebab, fermented chilli chicken, tandoori pomfret and qormas, as well as a selection of biryanis and speciality Indian desserts.
These dishes will be complimented by a range of Indian wines and cocktails, themed on the key states of India.
Having moved to Scotland as a teenager, Massey has since worked in two Michelin Star restaurants, Restaurant Martin Wishart in Edinburgh and the Isle of Eriska Hotel in Benderloch, near Oban, as well as some of Scotland’s most high profile kitchens including Marr Hall in Bishopton, Cail Bruach and the Marine and Lawn Hotel in Troon.
Celebrated by both critics and fellow chefs for his bold creativity and technical excellence, Massey was a finalist on BBC MasterChef:The Professionals earning invitations to cook alongside some of the UK’s most acclaimed chefs.
Massey opened Agneethi, in Glasgow’s south-side, in June 2025, and prior to that Sanja at the Kirkhouse Inn in Strathblane.
For two years Massey was also a part time lecturer at West of Scotland College.
