Head chef David Smith and junior sous chef Fin MacDonald of Ullapool’s award winning The Dipping Lugger, have been shortlisted as finalists in the Craft Guild of Chefs Awards 2026.
Smith has been shortlisted in the Restaurant Chef category, while MacDonald has been recognised in the Young Chef category, placing the Ullapool duo among some of the UK’s most accomplished chefs and rising culinary stars.
Widely regarded as the ‘chefs’ Oscars’, the Craft Guild of Chefs Awards celebrate exceptional talent across the hospitality industry, from apprentices and emerging chefs to seasoned professionals working across restaurants, pubs and wider catering environments.
Smith said: “It’s a real honour to be shortlisted alongside such an incredible group of chefs.
“What we’re doing at The Dipping Lugger is all about showcasing the best of the Highlands with creativity and care, and this recognition reflects the hard work of the whole team.”
MacDonald added: “To be named a finalist at this stage in my career is amazing.
“I’m constantly learning, and being surrounded by such a supportive and passionate team pushes me to improve every day. I’m really proud to represent The Dipping Lugger on a national stage.”
Dipping Lugger o-owner Robert Hicks commented: “Fin just embodies what this industry is all about – enthusiasm, dedication, sheer hard work, and a willingness to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in, no matter what level you’re at.

In addition to the main 14 categories, the Craft Guild of Chefs will also be presenting a Special Award to a chef who has made an outstanding contribution to the industry.
Previous winners include Clare Smyth, Asma Khan and Simon Rogan.
Winners will be announced at a ceremony held at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge on Wednesday, 10 June.
