Sponsored article: Celebrating influential women across the drinks industry

Ainslie Kelly
Business Account Manager – On Trade National Accounts, for Disaronno International UK
How long have you been in the industry?
I have been working in the licensed trade for over 10 years. I began my career in the Scottish licensed trade with Whyte & MacKay in 2016, working within On and Off Trade Marketing, before moving into my first sales role as a Business Development Manager for the Glasgow territory.
In 2021, I joined Disaronno International UK, where I initially managed Key Accounts across Scotland before progressing into a National Accounts role. I now oversee all major On-Trade National customers, including Stonegate, Mitchells & Butlers, and Greene King.
What is the best thing about working in the licensed trade?
I feel very fortunate to work within the licensed trade, particularly for such an exceptional brand. Without doubt, the greatest aspect of the industry is the people you meet and the relationships you build. I have formed lifelong friendships with individuals I may never otherwise have encountered, for which I am truly grateful.
I have also had the opportunity to visit some incredible places and take part in memorable trips, further nurturing my personal passion for travel.
What challenges have you faced as a woman working in the industry?
As a young woman starting my career in the whisky side of the licensed trade in my early twenties, an industry that is largely male-dominated, I faced challenges when selling high-value whiskies, as my knowledge and abilities were often underestimated because of my age.
However, by prioritising the importance of building strong relationships within the industry, I developed lasting connections with customers that helped me overcome these challenges.
In turn, this experience strengthened my confidence and contributed significantly to my growth as a sales professional, as well as personally.
Who have been the most influential mentors in your career so far, and what did you learn from them?
I have been fortunate to learn from many people throughout my career; however, there are a few exceptional women I have met who have supported and guided me in ways they may not even realize. They have become not only mentors, but also lifelong friends.
I would like to give a special mention to Nicola McRedmond, who has been supporting my professional journey since around 2019, when I was preparing to progress to the next stage of my career. Nicola has consistently been generous with her time, keeping me in mind for relevant opportunities, discussing my career aspirations, and providing valuable guidance on how to advance professionally.
Nicola is the owner of Drinkability, a recruitment business specializing in roles within the drinks industry. She also delivers professional development courses to enhance skills and offers leadership coaching.
A special mention also goes to Carolyn MacDonald, Senior National Account Manager at Vinarchy. Carolyn and I met while working at Whyte & MacKay in 2018, where she was an invaluable support in helping me build my knowledge during my first sales role in the industry. Her expertise in wine and spirits within the trade is second to none.
Not only has Carolyn been an outstanding mentor, but she has also become a close and trusted friend, and we continue to maintain a strong relationship to this day.
Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to meet and work alongside many inspirational women who have shaped my journey. I am also a strong advocate for equality and have likewise benefited greatly from the guidance of exceptional male mentors.
A special acknowledgment goes to my current On Trade Sales Director at Disaronno International UK, Scott Douglas. Since joining DIUK in April 2024 with the task of rebuilding our On Trade, Scott has demonstrated exceptional leadership and collaboration.
He has taken the time to listen, value, and incorporate my ideas and perspectives, which has fostered a strong and productive working relationship.
Scott has played a pivotal role in my professional growth at DIUK, providing invaluable opportunities to learn, develop, and advance my career. I am genuinely grateful for his support and excited about the future chapters ahead as we continue to grow together at DIUK.
What advice would you give a young woman starting out in hospitality in 2026?
My advice to any young woman starting out in hospitality is to trust your confidence, put yourself out there, and network as much as possible.
Many of the opportunities I have experienced have come from building strong relationships across the trade—from spirits and soft drinks to beer brands and beyond. Be your authentic self, own it, and most importantly, enjoy the journey along the way – it’s a fun one!! 😊
