Pairing premium cocktails with high-fidelity vinyl music is an approach to hospitality that first originated in Japan – but so-called ‘listening bars’ have started popping up in Scotland, the latest of which comes with the relaunch of The Caley Bar, within The Caledonian Edinburgh hotel.
Described as ‘a space to unwind, connect and immerse yourself in sound’, The Caley Bar is now offering that contemporary Japanese experience in a distinctly Edinburgh setting, with ‘its own Scottish perspective, celebrating craftsmanship, local partnerships and the city’s vibrant creative scene’.
The re-design of the space, by Cunningham McLean Ltd, has put vinyl turntables in pride of place as the room’s focal point, surrounded by plush booths, soft seating and a welcoming bar.
What is said to be a vast collection of records and live DJ aim to ensure the atmosphere evolves throughout the evening, with the music curated to match the rhythm and energy of the bar.

The new cocktail menu is a collaborative creation from The Caledonian’s bar team, designed to showcase local ingredients and craftsmanship.
Signature cocktails include Birch, blending birch sap vodka, vintage apple eau de vie, birch caramel and green tea-infused vermouth. Served in a locally crafted ceramic tumbler, this is said to embody the bar’s spirit of Scottish craftsmanship.
The bar team has also sourced a collection of rare and hard-to-find bottlings across whisky and other spirits, available exclusively to guests seeking something out of the ordinary.
Alongside the drinks, guests can enjoy a selection of refined bar bites, both savoury and sweet, created to complement the cocktails.
Food and beverage manager at The Caledonian, Matthew Swan, said: “The Caley Bar is all about atmosphere. From the warmth of the lighting to the sound of vinyl spinning through the room, it’s a space where people can slow down, connect and really enjoy the moment.
“The music, the cocktails, the setting – everything has been designed to feel effortless and inviting.”
The relaunch of The Caley Bar is the latest in a series of developments at The Caledonian Edinburgh, following continued investment from owners Henderson Park and management by Klarent Hospitality.
