Glasgow’s first Dishoom café is coming to Nelson Mandela Place

Bombay café brand Dishoom is set to achieve a ‘long held ambition’ by opening its first Glasgow location next month.

Following sites in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh, Dishoom will arrive on Glasgow’s Nelson Mandela Place on August 29th, where it will occupy a 7000 sq ft Grade A listed building that was once home to the city’s stock exchange.

Dishoom’s breakfast selection

As is Dishoom’s habit, each restaurant begins with a story, grounding its design in a specific moment from Bombay’s history or culture. In Glasgow, the look is being rooted in a fictional narrative centred around Miss X, a former covert agent from Bombay, who now runs an Irani café at the bottom of that Stock Exchange.

But of course, Dishoom is really all about the food, and Glasgow’s discerning Indian food fans can look forward to a smart new restaurant that will be open from morning to night, with a menu based on Bombay’s cafés, grills, street stalls and homes, including established favourites like breakfast Bacon Naan Rolls and Dishoom’s famed House Black Daal.

Dishoom’s executive chef, Arun Tilak

Executive chef, Arun Tilak, who has been part of the team since 2012 when he became head chef at the brand’s Covent Garden site, said: “Bringing Dishoom to Glasgow has long been a dream of ours.

“The team has worked hard to create a space and a menu that feels authentic to Bombay while celebrating the character of Glasgow and the heritage of its South Asian community.

“We invite people to make this café their own – whether they’re grabbing breakfast before work or settling in for a big evening feast with friends and family.”

As part of Dishoom’s ongoing Meal for a Meal initiative, for every meal enjoyed by guests, a meal will be donated to a child who might otherwise go without – through partnerships with Magic Breakfast in the UK and The Akshaya Patra Foundation in India.

To date, more than 20 million meals have been given through Dishoom’s 10 other UK cafés.
