Edinburgh’s Prestonfield House has been officially welcomed into the prestigious Relais & Châteaux hotel collection, joining the only other Scottish business already on that exclusive list, Ayrshire’s Glenapp Castle.
Established in France in 1954, the not-for-profit Relais & Châteaux association unites a collection of 580 independent, most often family-owned, hotels and restaurants throughout the world.
Prestonfield House described its ascension to that esteemed cohort as a ‘milestone moment’ which recognises its ‘heritage, service, and uniquely Scottish charm’, and ‘positions it perfectly’ for discerning travellers from around the world.
A typical example of a Scottish mansion, Prestonfield House features a 17th-century Dutch gable façade that overlooks a 20-acre estate, where Highland cows and peacocks roam among ancient trees, all just a few minutes from the centre of Edinburgh, at the foot of Arthur’s Seat.

For the past 20 years, Prestonfield House has been owned by James Thomson, who has sought to preserve everything that gives the historic residence its charm and authenticity.
Throughout its shared spaces and guest accommodation are original design features such as ornate 17th Century Cordoba leather panels and Mortlake tapestries, antique silks and velvets, historic artwork, fireplaces and furniture, specially commissioned for the House throughout three centuries.
Highlights of a stay at Prestonfield House include its indulgent afternoon teas, exceptional wine cellar, outstanding collection of malt whiskies and farm-to-table cuisine created by chef John McMahon, served in the Rhubarb Restaurant.
