Dundee has a brand-new space for ‘creativity, collaboration, and community’ – Canvas, a multi-use venue housed in the historic Blackness Ironworks in the city’s west end, which is also the home of 71 Brewing.
Launched this week with a showcase gig by Dundee-based alternative artist, Theo Bleak, Canvas promises to be ‘a place of discovery where ideas come to life’.
The building is being repurposed and reimagined into an appealing welcoming space for cultural events, craft markets and creative workspaces, as well as being the brewery’s official taproom, offering a dynamic environment for both music and art fans, and craft beer enthusiasts.
Canvas will host a diverse range of activities, including exhibitions, workshops, live music and DJ performances, and private gatherings, providing a welcoming space for all who step through its doors.
The venue is heated and cooled using an innovative system that recycles excess energy from 71 Brewing, ensuring a lower environmental impact while creating a comfortable space year-round.
The creative team are also collaborating with Draff Studio, to repurpose cast-off malt from the brewing process into bespoke furniture for the venue. This includes a state-of-the-art bar, ensuring that ‘sustainability and craftsmanship are woven into the very fabric of the venue’.
“Canvas is about bringing people together to share ideas, celebrate creativity, and enjoy exceptional beer in a truly inspiring setting,” said managing director Neil Mowat.
“We’re excited to welcome the Dundee community and beyond to be part of this journey.”
Canvas opens weekly between Thursday and Sunday evenings with a full event programme available via Instagram @canvasdundee.
