Introducing SLTN’s Spirit of the Sixties Cocktail Competition finalists:
Absolutely Free
By Jonny Campbell, The Barrelman
“This drink is bold, layered with flavours, and a bit quirky – just like Frank Zappa’s sound on Absolutely Free by The Mothers of Invention.
Like many of the songs on ‘We’re Only in It for the Money’, Absolutely Free criticises the hippie movement and the Summer of Love. The song’s lyrics are a parody of psychedelia, especially the idea of expanding one’s consciousness through the use of drugs.
It’s got a mix of sharp citrus, smoky complexity, and a touch of sweetness – combining unlikely ingredients that come together to create something totally unique.
Mezcal gives the drink a smoky, rebellious edge, reflecting Zappa’s unconventional approach to music. Aperol adds a slightly bitter, citrusy note, making the drink vibrant and bold.
Lemon juice gives it a fresh, bright kick, balancing the smokiness and bitterness.
Cucumber syrup is an unconventional ingredient that provides a cool, herbaceous sweetness. Perfect for reflecting the quirky, experimental nature of Absolutely Free.”
