Sustainability is the key ingredient in this cocktail competition

BARTENDERS are being encouraged to flex their creative muscles and embrace sustainability with the launch of this year’s Sustainable Cocktail Challenge.

The annual competition, run by rum brand Flor de Caña, challenges entrants to create a sustainable cocktail using Flor de Caña as a base. The recipe then has to be shared on the entrant’s own social media account as well as their bar’s account and included on their venue’s drinks list for at least a month.

Ten finalists will then be selected to compete in the local final, with those winners progressing to the next stage of the competition. The global final of the competition will be held in Nicaragua.

Mateo Ortiz, UK brand ambassador for Flor de Caña, said: “Last year we had some outstandingly creative entries from mixologists up and down the country, who truly showed how the UK is leading the way when it comes to cocktail innovation.

“We can’t wait to see what this year has to offer, as we seek to show how exciting and beneficial driving sustainability can be for the on-trade and consumers alike.”

Bartender Dan Nevsky has teamed with Flor de Caña to promote the competition. He said: “What sets this initiative apart from other cocktail competitions is that it teaches as much as it learns.

“Talking about sustainability practices is only the first step in a longer path to a better future.”
