Hospitality star of tomorrow takes top UK award

A SCOTTISH hospitality student has scooped top prize at a prestigious, UK-wide industry competition.

Tara Humphrey, a first-year hospitality management student at City of Glasgow College, has won this year’s Front of House Toque d’Or award from Nestle Professional.

The annual competition is open to hospitality students and apprentices across the UK, awarding winners in Front of House and Back of House.

Tara, from Auchterarder, triumphed over finalists from City of Liverpool College and Hugh Baird College. She will now join the other competition winners on a visit to the Worldchefs Congress & Expo in Abu Dhabi in June, as well as a gastronomic weekend in Dubai.

In addition to the Toque d’Or win, Tara is part of a team that is in the running for another UK-wide hospitality competition, the UK Young Restaurant Team of the Year.

Tara she said she was “over the moon” with the win.

“Winning Toque d’Or is such a great confidence booster,” said Tara.

“It’s been an unbelievable experience and I’ve learned so much from taking part. I now have the finals of the Young Restaurant Team of the Year to look forward to, as well as the trip to Abu Dhabi and Dubai.”

Jane Carr-Gomm, associate dean for hospitality and tourism at City of Glasgow College, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Tara and reflects her skill, professionalism and work ethic.

“Toque d’Or is a high-profile competition, respected throughout the industry, so Tara should be rightly very proud of this accomplishment.”
