Gannet and Absent Ear join forces for refugee charity

GLASGOW venues The Gannet and The Absent Ear will team up next month for two special events to raise money for refugee charity Refuweegee.

On 2nd May the team from cocktail bar The Absent Ear will take over the bar at The Gannet (the reigning SLTN Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year), with the reverse happening the following day. Both nights will feature special six-course menus and pairings developed by both teams, with examples including aged dripping poached lobster paired with a Twisted Martini made with sake, cubeb, Szechuan and some of the lobster dripping.

In addition to enjoying the food and drinks, guests will be able to bid for another unique experience: the chance for Gannet chef Peter McKenna and a team from The Absent Ear to visit the winning bidder’s home and prepare food and drinks for the winner and their guests.

Tickets to the events are £100 each, with customers limited to just 35 for each evening.

There will also be an online raffle with prizes including dinners and drinks at The Gannet or The Absent Ear as well as Absent Ear sister venues Saint Luke’s and The Amsterdam.

Alex Riches, group operations manager for The Absent Ear, said: “I’m just so happy to be involved in bringing two Glasgow institutions together to support a charity that epitomises Glaswegian heart, supporting those who have been displaced from conflict zones in Ukraine, Europe and around the world.

“We need to work with charities like Refuweegee now more than ever – the need is spiralling out of control and that famous Glasgow hospitality is essential. We are rightly proud of our city and this is a chance to show why.”

Peter McKenna, chef and owner of The Gannet, said it “made perfect sense to team up with our friends at The Absent Ear and raise funds for the children affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine”.

“We have put our heads together and come up with a unique food and drink pairing based around our love of the Scottish larder and their quirky take on cocktails,” said McKenna.

“These will definitely be two nights that will be remembered for some time and we are extremely excited to share them with you.”
