JD Wetherspoon will open a new pub in Glasgow’s Shawlands area as part of a £145 million investment in new and existing sites.
The Shawlands pub is one of 18 new venues the company is currently developing across the UK, with refurbishments taking place in a further 57 existing sites.
When those initial projects are complete the company has said it plans to spend £750m opening 15 new pubs and refurbishing 50 existing sites every year for the next ten years. Wetherspoon currently operates 871 pubs across the UK.
“Our immediate investment will provide work for architects, contractors and builders as well as result in 2000 new jobs for staff in our pubs,” said Wetherspoon founder Tim Martin.
“We are geared up to start on the first projects within a few months.
“We are also committed to our long-term investment and job creation programme over the next decade.
“However, the investment is conditional on the UK opening back up again on a long-term basis, with no further lockdowns or the constant changing of rules.”
