A Ghost of malts past

The new Ghost and Rare Port Ellen

LICENSEES will be able to welcome a friendly ghost into their premises next month, when Diageo releases the latest in its Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare collection.

Ghost and Rare Port Ellen contains single malt from the company’s Port Ellen distillery, which closed its doors in 1983. The Port Ellen edition, which is priced at £275 a bottle, follows the release of the Ghost and Rare Brora – another ‘silent’ distillery – which was introduced last year.

As well as Port Ellen, the new expression includes spirit from distilleries including Caledonian, Carsebridge, Mortlach, Dailuaine, Cragganmore, Blair Athol and Oban.

Master blender Jim Beveridge said the Ghost and Rare series provides “a fascinating glimpse into another world, exploring the unique, inimitable character of whiskies from a small number of iconic, closed distilleries”.

Diageo announced this year that it will reopen both the Brora and Port Ellen distilleries in the near future.
