‘Old and rare’ trilogy launched

Big Peat 25 Year Old Gold Edition

FAMILY-owned  Scotch whisky firm Douglas Laing & Co has extended its Big Peat range with the launch of a 25 year old Islay blended malt – the first Big Peat to carry an age statement.

Big Peat 25 Year Old Gold Edition represents the first in a new trilogy of limited edition ‘old and rare’ releases; two consecutive limited edition expressions will follow the Gold Edition.

The Gold Edition vatted malt is bottled at cask strength (52.1% ABV) without colouring or chill filtration.

Tasting notes describe it as “sweetly-peated as ever” on the palate, warming later to creosote, black pepper and chimney smoke, while the finish is said to display “that same warm depth of sweet personality before deliciously damp bonfire ash, coal dust and charred meat appear”.

Douglas Laing & Co said Big Peat 25 Year Old – and the two expressions to follow – is designed to “bring to life the journey of the spirit with each year that passes”.

Cara Laing, director of whisky at Douglas Laing & Co, said: “Our very special marriage of Islay single malts is bursting with rich, deep, phenolic and typically Islay flavours, clearly showing Big Peat’s signature sweet smokiness at its heart.

“It will be fascinating to see how the spirit develops as the trilogy progresses.”
