McGinty takes Tequila crown in world final

Edinburgh bartender triumphs at Patrón Perfectionist global final

McGinty collects his prize.

Edinburgh bartender Mike McGinty has fended off competition from around the world to come out on top at the Patrón Perfectionist global final.

McGinty, manager of recently-launched bar The Voyage of Buck, sealed the deal in Jalisco, Mexico last night (January 24) with his tequila concoction The Bell of Jalisco – a blend of Patrón Reposado, chamomile-infused vermouth and a yellow bell pepper shrub.

The Edinburgh mixologist was joined at Hacienda Patrón by national competition winners from Mexico, Australia, France, Spain, Italy and the United Arab Emirates, where the finalists were treated to an exclusive tasting hosted by master distiller Francisco Alcaraz before battling it out for the Perfectionist title.

Following his victory, McGinty said he was “beyond thrilled”.

“What a wonderful way to kick off the year. I got my inspiration for my cocktail from understanding the time and effort that goes into the creation of every single drop of Patrón; I really wanted to create a serve dedicated to the men and women that are involved in the creation of this ultra-premium tequila. The name of my cocktail, The Bell of Jalisco, is a reference to the bell peppers that have been used and the belief that Patrón is the ‘belle’ of Jalisco,” said McGinty.
