Race is on to land historic island hotel

Cilla and Gracie among former guests at Orkney venue

AN Orkney hotel which counts singer and presenter Cilla Black, actress Gracie Fields and Scottish actor Robert Carlyle among its previous guests is up for sale.
Property firm Bruce & Co is marketing the three-star Stromness Hotel with a price tag of ÂŁ850,000.
The hotel, which overlooks Stromness harbour and the Scapa Flow, has been trading since 1901.
The property comprises 42 en suite letting bedrooms, the Scapa Flow restaurant and the Hamnavoe lounge bar, which offers a la carte dining for 70 covers. There’s also the public Flattie Bar, which has a pool table, jukebox, games machine and fruit machine, and is accessed by a separate entrance.
The hotel holds a full wedding licence and can accommodate parties of up to 120 guests within its function room, which leads out into the Victorian garden. There is also a smaller function room, which can accommodate 20 people and can be used for functions and meetings.
The business is said to be popular with visitors attracted by the area’s rich archaeological heritage and historical sites, which include Skara Brae and the Ring of Brodgar, the standing stones of Stenness, the tomb of the Eagles and the Boroughs of Birsay and Gurness. Other attractions include St Magnus Cathedral, the Italian Chapel and the Churchill Barriers.
Bruce & Co’s Andrew Dodd said the Orkney islands are also popular with divers keen to explore the waters of Scapa Flow and visitors to events like the St Magnus Festival, Orkney Science Festival and The County Show.
“The sale of the Stromness Hotel offers an excellent opportunity to purchase a high quality, beautifully presented Orcadian hotel which benefits highly from its location and high levels of tourism,” he said.
