Andrea Gardiner
Assistant Bar Manager – The American Bar, Gleneagles – highlighted by Edrington UK
How long have you been in the industry?
I have worked in hospitality since I was 21, with the last four years being at Gleneagles Hotel.
What is the best thing about working in the licensed trade?
The best thing is that you can help create unforgettable experiences for others, by creating immersive, beverage programmes for guests. You also have the opportunity sometimes to travel all over the world, taking in inspiration, which is super exciting.
What challenges have you faced as a women working in the industry?
I have always been treated with respect and felt equal to my colleagues in the industry. However, it can be challenging as a female, at times, to sustain a consistent high-energy. To help combat this I focussed some of my energy on various projects to help develop my career within and outside of work, so that I continue to grow.
Who have been the most influential mentors in your career so far, and what did you learn from them?
There have been several but the most recent is my manager Michele Mariotti, Head of Bars, who has guided me from day one during my time here at Gleneagles, sharing all of his knowledge and expertise.
I have not only learned a lot about how to set and maintain standards in a 5-star luxury environment but though his mentorship, he helped me learn about the kind of leader that I want to be for my team.
Kaitlin Wilkes and Kristine Bocchino, from The Ada Coleman Project, have also helped me gain confidence and establish myself within the hospitality community. With their support network, I have been able to create connections with inspiring women, from the industry, worldwide.
What advice would you give a young woman starting out in hospitality in 2026?
Make the most of every opportunity for development, never stop learning, and continuously invest in your personal growth. Stay curious, embrace new challenges, and keep pushing towards what’s next, while enjoying every moment along the way!
