Master Blender at Whyte & Mackay

How long have you been in the industry?

My journey in the industry spans over 25 years, and what a journey it’s been!

It all started after I completed my PhD in Analytical Chemistry, and I stepped into the world of whisky as a Laboratory Analyst at Port Dundas Distillery.

Since then, I’ve had the privilege of wearing many hats at some of the most iconic names in the business, including Chivas Brothers, Allied Distillers, Halewood, and now Whyte & Mackay.

Each role has brought new challenges and unforgettable experiences, fuelling my passion for whisky and shaping the Master Blender I am today.

What is the best thing about working in the licensed trade?

What truly makes working in the licensed trade so rewarding is the endless variety and sense of adventure that comes with the world of whisky. Every day offers the chance to learn something new, and I firmly believe there’s a whisky out there for every palate.

Connecting with people from around the globe, exchanging experiences, and igniting their passion for the spirit is what keeps me inspired and makes this industry feel like a community rather than just a job.

What challenges have you faced as a woman working in the industry?

When I first started working in the world of whisky, I found myself among just a handful of women – a true rarity at the time. While I’ve always been proud that my abilities and commitment to the craft spoke louder than my gender, there’s no denying those early days sometimes felt like forging a new path.

Thankfully, the landscape is shifting: I’m delighted to see more and more women joining our ranks, bringing fresh perspectives and energy.

In Whyte and Mackay we have women working at all levels, including leading our brands on a global level, as Distillery Managers and as Blenders. It’s inspiring to witness the industry grow ever more welcoming and inclusive, and I’m proud to be part of this positive change.

Who have been the most influential mentors in your career so far, and what did you learn from them?

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with an array of talented individuals: company chemists, distillery managers, and dedicated blending teams. Each partnership has been a masterclass in its own right, allowing me to delve deeper into both the technical intricacies and the sensory artistry of whisky-making.

These experiences haven’t just expanded my expertise; they’ve fuelled my passion for teamwork and reinforced my belief that learning is a lifelong journey.

What advice would you give a young woman starting out in hospitality in 2026?

I firmly believe that whisky remains an endless adventure, no one can ever claim to know it all, and that’s precisely what makes this industry still so exciting to me!

My advice to any young woman stepping into hospitality this year would be: let your curiosity lead the way. Embrace every opportunity to learn, never be shy of asking questions, and don’t let the complexity of the field overwhelm you.

The magic lies in the journey, focus on honing your skills, uphold the highest standards, and share your passion generously with everyone you meet.

Regardless of gender, your enthusiasm and commitment will open doors and inspire others.

Remember, you’re part of a vibrant community, and your unique perspective is both valued and essential.
