As part of ongoing efforts to encourage community spirit around its flagship pub in Leith, Malones has just announced that it is to host Edinburgh’s first-ever Rock Paper Scissors Tournament – with a £50 bar tab for the winner.
Dating back to the Chinese Han Dynasty (circa 206 BC – 220 AD), Rock Paper Scissors is considered the world’s oldest hand game.
Despite its global ubiquity, and official league tournaments being hosted around the world since 2015, the game has never been played competitively in Scotland’s capital.

In this historic oversight, Malones Leith general manager Charlie Douglas saw an opportunity.
“We wanted to create something that’s equal parts ridiculous and brilliant,” said Douglas.
“Rock Paper Scissors is universal – everyone knows how to play, and when you add a crowd, a prize, and a few pints, it becomes pure entertainment.

“We’re expecting big energy, big laughs, and of course, everyone respecting the classic ‘1-2-3-shoot’ rule.”
The tournament kicks off at 2:30pm on Saturday 20th September, with 32 entrants battling it out in best-of-three matches, culminating in a grand final showdown.
Everyone is welcome to join, for a nominal entry fee of £3, but places are limited, so it is advisable to secure one via the Malones website.
Spectators are welcome, but only ticket holders can compete.

Goose’s Quizzes, which runs the venue’s popular Monday quiz nights, will be adding its signature flare to the afternoon, bringing ‘sharp wit, dramatic commentary, and just the right amount of chaos’ to keep competitors on their toes.
