Scottish hospitality staff encouraged to go sober for October

Alcohol-free coach David Carson

Industry charity Hospitality Health is trying to persuade as many Scottish hospitality staff as possible to take part in OctSober  – while also raising funds for the charity.

Alcohol-free coach David Carson, who suggested the idea, explained: “Hospitality is a very demanding industry, and it is all too easy to rely on alcohol to take the edge off things, which can in turn hinder day to day performance.

“Having worked in hospitality for 25 years and previously been a regular drinker, I know this only too well.

“Taking a month-long break from alcohol offers numerous benefits for the body, mind, and overall well-being,” insisted Carson. “Many people experience less stress, better sleep and more energy – which most Hospitality staff are crying out for.”

Carson also suggested that a break from alcohol can lead to ‘enhanced clarity, improved focus, and better emotional stability’, which can be a benefit to all hospitality workers, especially those in leadership roles.

“Ultimately, committing to an alcohol-free month is a powerful act of self-care that supports both immediate health benefits and long-term wellness,” said Carson.

An additional benefit will be that those taking part can be supported and sponsored by colleagues, friends and family, thereby raising funds for Hospitality Health.

Gordon McIntyre MBE

Founding chairman of Hospitality Health, Gordon McIntyre MBE, said: “When David made the suggestion, it was a no brainer – the campaign aligns perfectly with what we are doing in promoting wellness within the industry.

“It is a win–win. The individual taking part in OctSober will feel a huge benefit in their wellbeing and in turn Hospitality Health will receive funds to support the industry in other ways.

“It is a collaboration I am sure we will have for years to come – get it in your diary!”

McIntyre added that participating staff can use the opportunity to promote the alcohol-free range of their venue.

He noted that the quality and range of alcohol-free beers and lagers had improved greatly, and customers who may avoid hospitality venues for fear of failing in their efforts to avoid alcohol may be more inclined to visit if they see staff taking part as well.

The Jump/Ship alcohol-free beer range

Low’n’no beer maker Jump/Ship brewing is supporting the campaign. Its founder Sonja Mitchell said: “As a dedicated alcohol-free brewery, we’re committed to giving non-drinkers the best possible choices.

“I hope our beers will help satisfy the thirst of those participating in this campaign for Hospitality Health.”

Support will be provided to those who sign up to take part, beginning with a presentation for participants on Monday 29th September at the Clayton Hotel, on Glasgow’s Clydeside, with an on-line session also being planned.

A factsheet is being compiled outlining the benefits of Octsober, plus a toolkit of support, including weekly Zoom calls and WhatsApp groups.

To start fundraising, participants should go to the event’s dedicated JustGiving page.
