Rosaluna mezcal makes the World’s Best Margarita minus the smoke

Rosaluna mezcal, now available in the UK

Described as ‘the less smoky mezcal’, Rosaluna has already made its mark internationally as the 2024 winner of the ‘World’s Best Margarita’ from the US-based Beverage Testing Institute.

With mezcal gaining popularity in the UK, the brand has now arrived on these shores via Spirit Cartel to challenge the ‘samey’ smoky liquids that currently define the category.

Bottled at 40% ABV, Rosaluna is an all-natural, single estate, agave spirit distilled by a sixth-generation family in the hills of Santiago Matatlán in Oaxaca, the heartland of Mexican mezcal-making.

Rosaluna’s flavour profile lends itself to mixing

Certified organic, non-GMO and free from added sugar, the brand’s stated goal is to produce the very best mezcal, while respecting both the Oaxaca land and its traditions.

Rosaluna’s eco-friendly practices include using agave waste as fertiliser and fibre from the plant for its labels.

It also utilises 40% recycled glass bottles, while the estate recently achieved an 80% reduction in its water usage.

The liquid’s tasting notes describe it as ‘leading with a delicate hint of agave smoke, finishing with a subtle layer of sweet fruit and baking spice – with none of the overpowering smokiness of some mezcals’.

David Hood, general manager at Spirit Cartel, noted that to take that World’s Best Margarita award, the brand had to beat ‘dozens of tequilas’.

“Rosaluna’s less smoky profile results in a mezcal with excellent mixability and versatility across a wide range of recipes,” said Hood.

“Mezcal’s on the rise in the UK, but the markets getting crowded with ‘samey’ liquids, so we’re confident of success for this subtly different and planet-friendly mezcal.”
