Inveraray’s multi-award winning venue The George Hotel is up for sale, after being owned by the same family since 1860.
Owner of The George, Kris Clark, said: “The George Hotel has been part of the family since 1860, six generations committed to providing an authentic and quality product in hospitality and weave a little more magic into the beautiful historic town of Inveraray.
“The family have decided that the time is right to hand on the baton to a new generation to continue the legacy of one of the most iconic hotels in Scotland.”
The sale is being jointly handled by Graeme Smith from Smith and Clough, and Brian Sheldon at Christie & Co.
Smith described The George Hotel as ‘an authentic piece of Scottish history’, set with in the highly regarded town of Inveraray, on the shores of Loch Fyne, and a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’ for prospective buyers.
“Regarded as one of the finest and best-established hotels in Scotland, with a worldwide reputation, it has been owned and carefully run by the Clark family since 1860.
“This unique and highly awarded hotel is presented in excellent condition throughout – full of character, charm and history that is second to none. International interest in this opportunity is guaranteed,” said Smith.
“Both Brian and I are expecting high levels of activity from multiple operators and single purchase buyers looking for a trophy asset.”
Sheldon said he was delighted to be working alongside Smith and Clough on ‘this first-class assignment’.
“The George Hotel is an established family business located within the Royal Burgh of Inveraray, the ancestral seat of the Duke of Argyll, which is available to purchase for the first time since 1860.”
The George sits on the Main Street of Inveraray, which is itself accessed via one of Scotland’s most popular tourist roads, the A83.
The business has been recognised within the Scottish Hospitality trade for decades, achieving many accolades, including SLTN Whisky Bar of the Year 2021, Inn of the Year at the 2020 Scottish Hotel Awards, Sunday Mail Pub of the Year, Outdoor Bar of the Year 2021 & 2024, and runner-up Scottish Hotel of the Year at the Scottish Hotel awards 2024.
Most recently, The George was awarded an AA Rosette in July 2024.
The selling agents are seeking freehold offers around £3,900,000.
