Sauchiehall St will have one less pound shop next month, when famed US fried chicken chain Popeyes opens its first Glasgow branch.

The July 5th opening will be Popeyes’ 18th in 2024, and its third in Scotland, following a successful launch in Barrhead last Autumn, followed by another in Aberdeen this spring, both occasions which generated overnight queues and substantial publicity for the New Orleans-founded business.

Touting its reputation for serving ‘the chicken sandwich that broke the internet’, Popeyes has opening day giveaways planned to draw attention to the 80-seat space it will be occupying on the pedestrianised lower stretch of Sauchiehall Street.

The first 50 in the queue will have the chance to win prizes, including limited edition Popeyes sneakers created in partnership with local trainer experts BoxFresh – and the first three people in the queue will win free Popeyes for a year.

“Chicken fans in the Glasgow area will be able to experience Popeyes world-famous shatter crunch for themselves once they get their hands on the mouth-watering menu,” declared the opening announcement. “Popeyes brings the flavours of New Orleans to the UK, with its signature 12-hour marinated chicken, plus original Southern biscuits and gravy.”

Popeyes Sauchiehall Street will also be serving a breakfast menu until 11am every day, featuring the ‘Big Cajun’ breakfast roll, brekkie wraps, cajun hash browns and Nutella-topped buttermilk biscuits.

CEO at Popeyes UK, Tom Crowley, said: “Since we opened in Barrhead last Autumn, we’ve been asked for a city centre restaurant and we are thrilled to announce that Popeyes will be opening in the heart of Glasgow this summer.

“Opening in Scotland has been key for us since we first landed in the UK, and we’re looking forward to welcoming a fantastic new crowd to our next location. Our recent openings have been some of the biggest to date, not just in the UK but for Popeyes globally, and we are confident that this next launch in Scotland will prove just as popular.”
