Oak-aged Sphynx tequila launched to UK market by Big Brother couple

A NEW premium tequila brand, Sphynx, has been launched by a Yorkshire couple who first came to public attention as Big Brother contestants.

Sukhvinder and Imran Javeed have since combined their ‘genuine passion for agave’ with their preference for the Canadian Sphynx breed of cats, to produce the first tequila brand owned by an English couple of Indian heritage.

The authentic Mexican spirit originates from a female-led family distillery in Jalisco, with several generations of expertise and their own vast blue agave fields. Thereafter, it is aged in custom wine and sherry barrels, creating a tequila that is claimed to be unlike any other available on the UK market.

Another unique selling point are the custom bottles shaped like the head of the aforementioned Canadian Sphynx cats.

Sphynx Tequila is available in four expressions – Blanco Tequila, Añejo Tequila, Añejo Cristalino, and Extra Aged Añejo Black Oak.

Sukhvinder said: “Tequila has such a special place in my heart. My husband and I love the history, culture and traditions of Mexico and of course, their official spirit became our favourite.

“We wanted to create a legacy brand and creating a tequila was a natural choice for us. We are lucky to be working with a brilliant female-led distillery in the lowlands of Jalisco where we age our tequila in custom wine barrels for a completely unique flavour profile. It’s been a labour of love and we couldn’t be more excited to be officially launching Sphynx Tequila out in the world.”

She added: “We assure you that you will never drink tequila with salt and lime again. Sphynx Tequila embraces the natural flavours of the finest agave, grown for a minimum of seven years. We chose to age our tequila in various French oak barrels that allowed us to create custom profiles, giving our drinkers a unique smooth flavour that allows you to simply pour it over ice, sip and enjoy.”

All the tequilas in the range are made with 100% Blue Weber Agave and contain zero additives, while the bottles are made from 100% recycled glass. The new expressions are available to purchase directly from the brand’s own website or through Master of Malt.
