BY COMPARISON to the premium whisky sector’s focus on barley, vodka manufacturers rarely make a fuss about the provenance of their grains – but Italy’s Altamura Distilleries is taking a different approach.
Announcing the UK launch of its premium vodka, which will be available through Boutinot UK from 1st June 2023, the firm stressed that it is the first spirit made from 100% ancient Altamura grains, distilled using a process designed to preserve the essence of its ingredients.
Available in the UK at 43% abv in a 700 ml bottle, the resultant vodka is described as ‘elegant and refined’ on the palate, deriving richness from the ‘sun kissed Italian terroir’ where the wheat is grown.
The wheat variety used has been grown in Altamura or the adjoining communes of Puglia for over 2000 years, and is known for its unchanged character, which is why the bread of Altamura is globally celebrated for its distinct flavour.
“We are excited to offer a vodka that is truly unique and represents the values of our company,” said Altamura Distilleries founder Frank Grillo.
“Strong but elegant, intense but smooth, this vodka represents a new and undiscovered tasting experience. We are sure you will love it.”
The company reckons vodka enthusiasts will embrace the product’s unique taste and story, making it a worthwhile addition to the luxury on-trade.
Altamura Distilleries won three silver medals at the Bartenders’ Brand Awards 2023, with a total score of 76 points, ranking 3rd and 4th overall among 27 vodka brands.
In The Fifty Best – Imported Vodka competition, Altamura won a double gold medal and was named the best vodka.
