New chef does the numbers in Glasgow

Revamped west end outlet launches with five-course tasting menu

A NEW Glasgow west end restaurant launched today (August 21) with a five-course seasonal tasting menu showcasing chef Modou Diagne’s “stylish and experimental” culinary skills.

Located at 111 Cleveden Road, 111 by Modou is the inaugural restaurant for the chef, who arrived in Glasgow from Senegal in 2013 and initially slept rough before finding refuge through a charity. A year later he got a job as a kitchen porter with chef and operator Nico Simeone and worked his way up through the ranks until, earlier this year, Simeone turned his 111 by Nico restaurant over to 26 year old Modou.

The new 111 by Modou opened with a reduced capacity of 28 (down from 46 covers) and is described as a “cool, bright and airy” dining space with neutral décor, dark furnishings and specially-commissioned graffiti wall art.

The seasonal tasting menu, which is priced at £30 per person with a matching wine flight at £25 per person and is available every Tuesday to Saturday, is described as an “immersive experience” with a choice of ingredients for each of the five courses.

Chef Modou said the opening of the restaurant is a “dream come true”.

“I’m so grateful to Nico for this opportunity and I still can’t quite believe that my name is above the doors at 111,” he said.

“I’m excited about the journey ahead of us, showcasing great produce and introducing myself to the local community and welcoming new and familiar faces back to the restaurant.”
