More than half of consumers will return to pubs in the first month of reopening

WELL over half of consumers are planning to return to their favourite venues in the first month of reopening, according to research from syrups producer Monin.

A survey carried out by the company found socialising with friends was the thing 53% of consumers missed the most during lockdown. Of the consumers polled, 63% said they were planning to return to the on-trade within a month of venues reopening, with established favourites likely to be the big sellers.

More than a quarter of respondents (27%) said they would be purchasing their favourite food and drink options when they return, with 53% ordering food or drink that they already know they like.

Participants were also asked about safety measures they would like to see in venues, with 45% of respondents saying stations with antibacterial hand gel would be a welcome sight, 35% wanting to see clearly displayed protection measures around the venue and 29% in favour of limiting the time customers can spend in the venue.

Monin has created two online ‘workshops’ for pub and bar operators covering various aspects of reopening and featuring industry experts.

The first, which will go live this Friday (June 19) will cover product range and operations, with a second session on June 29 covering customer service.

Both workshops will be available on the Monin website.

Lee Hyde, beverage innovation manager at Monin, said: “The research gives some clear pointers on everyday operational needs to reassure customer bases, but it of course goes deeper than the headlines, which is why we are keen to bring together a range of leaders to share their insights, opinions and tips for the foodservice industry to maximise opportunities.”
