Coronavirus: Online platform to bolster hospitality businesses goes live

A NEW website connecting small businesses to customers during the coronavirus “lockdown” period has been launched by students at Edinburgh University.

COVIDCollect is a click-and-collect platform which allows bars and restaurants to register and publish a list of items or services on offer to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic. The website also provides a service for customers to book slots online to pick up and pay for items at the business.

Businesses already listed on the platform include Personal Chef Edinburgh, the Victoria Park Hotel and 305.kitchen in Edinburgh and One Basket in Kelso.

Speaking to SLTN, the website’s designers, students Armin Ghofrani and Gauthier Collas – who have backgrounds in computer science and web development – said the platform was initially set up for the use of local businesses in Edinburgh but that venues across Scotland are able to benefit from its services.

The team has also outlined safety measures on the website in line with NHS guidance to conduct pick up and payment of items safely.

COVIDCollect is a branch of Ghofrani and Collas’ project Next Chain which is a reusable and smart packaging solutions scheme for food producers.
