EDINBURGH-based Vittoria Group has opened what’s said to be Scotland’s biggest fish and chip restaurant in a former church in the city’s old town.
The 300-cover Bertie’s Restaurant and Bar is spread over 11,000 sq ft in the former St John’s Church, offering a menu that is described as reinventing chip shop classics with dishes that range from traditional suppers to a Malaysian-style fish curry.
The venue represents the first step away from Italian food for the operator, which opened its first eatery in the capital in 1970.
Tony Crolla, the group’s chairman, said the restaurant is a “new chapter” for the family business.
The company’s other restaurants include Divino, Vittoria on the Bridge, Vittoria on the Walk and La Favorita.
