Dundee bartender is king of the world

DUNDEE bartender Dimi Savvaidis has triumphed over bartenders from around the world to lift the cocktail crown in a global competition.

Dimi Savvaidis (centre) is the first ever UK winner of the contest.

The mixologist at the city’s King of Islington bar was named winner of the Global Monin Cup cocktail competition in France – the first ever UK winner of the contest, which is open to professional bartenders under the age of 28.

Judges praised Savvaidis’ “exceptional talent” in the contest, which saw bartenders tasked with using the syrup firm’s products to create a signature serve.

Savvaidis, who secured his place in the global final after winning the UK Monin Cup in September, competed against fellow finalists in three rounds, which tested their understanding of the drinks industry, ability to identify ingredients and measurements by taste, and the importance of quality low and no-ABV serves.

In the final round, the Dundee bartender prevailed with his Three Nights in Paris serve (see below), which incorporated Monin’s Original and Spicy Mango syrups with tequila and vermouth, sealing his win and the €5000 prize.

Savvaidis said he was “absolutely overwhelmed” at the result.

“It took a while for the news that I was the UK winner to sink in, but to be named global winner having competed against 45 of the best bartenders from around the globe is a really proud day for me,” he said.

“I’m excited for my next challenge and to continue working with the Monin range to create amazing cocktails.”

Tihomir Gergov, Monin business development manager for the UK & Ireland, said: “Winning the Global Monin Cup is a huge achievement and really recognises Dimi’s talent. It’s a fantastic opportunity for him to raise his profile in the industry and showcase his exceptional talent.”
