THE new state-of-art Macallan distillery and visitor centre in Speyside opened its doors to the public on Saturday (June 2).
The £140 million facility, which is located on the Easter Elchies estate – home to The Macallan since 1824, took three and a half years to build and is designed to fit into the local landscape, with a turf-covered roof which rises and falls in the style of the surrounding hills.
The “centrepiece” of a £500m investment in the brand by owner Edrington Group, the new distillery will enable production of The Macallan to increase by a third.
Edrington chief executive Ian Curle said: “The unsurpassed quality of The Macallan is in high demand and we face the future confidently with this new distillery.
“It’s an authentic, abiding, ambitious investment that will match consumer expectations for generations to come.”
