Cucumbers have become currency

• June 14 was World Cucumber Day.

CUSTOMERS looking for a G&T were reaching for grocery bags instead of their wallets last month, thanks to William Grant & Sons.

To celebrate World Cucumber Day (June 14), the company’s Hendrick’s gin brand allowed customers to purchase a Hendrick’s and tonic using the green fruit as payment.

The gin maker partnered with various bars across England, which, from 5pm to 8pm on Wednesday June 14, accepted cucumbers as currency in exchange for a Hendrick’s and tonic.

It’s claimed that it represented the world’s first dedicated ‘Cucumber Hour’.
