Scottish water springs in to top spot

PERTHSHIRE-based Highland Spring has taken the top spot in the UK’s water market, accounting for one in every five litres of bottled water sold.

Zenith’s 2012 UK Bottled Water Report, out last week, said the firm’s output (excluding exports) grew by 10.8% year-on-year to 374.6 million litres, propelling the firm to the top position.
Highland Spring now commands a 20.6% share of the packaged water market, Zenith said, having supplied 44.9 million more litres than its closest rival, Danone, in 2011.
The Highland Spring brand itself is said to be the second most popular still bottled water in the UK, behind Danone’s Evian, having increased its volume share from 8.8% in 2010 to 9.4% in 2011. It has also retained its position as the most popular brand of sparkling bottled water with a 13.2% share by volume.
“This is a major achievement and will contribute considerably towards fulfilling our vision of becoming a £100m turnover and 500m litre business over the next few years,” said chief executive Les Montgomery.
