Rum and sailing regattas go together like gin and golf courses

Mount Gay has sponsored the racing yacht Luna this season

Mount Gay, claimed to be the world’s oldest running rum distillery, has spent the summer splashing about amongst the UK’s sailing scene, raising its flag as a sponsor of the Cowes Week Regatta.

Just as gin has formed a seemingly unbreakable bond with the world of golf, rum can justifiably lay claim to the offshore leisure set, given its historical origins maturing on sea voyages from the Caribbean.

With that in mind, Mount Gay has long associated itself with the global regatta scene, first catching attention with its distinctive Red Hat during the 1983 America’s Cup campaign.

The brand has since continued to actively support sailing culture and ocean stewardship, and this season has sponsored the racing yacht Luna, which has competed under its colours since May.

As well as being official rum partner of Cowes Week earlier this month, Mount Gay will be prominent at the Southampton International Boat Show in September, showcasing its three signature rums; Eclipse, Black Barrel, and XO, served neat and in a selection of cocktails.

UK brand manager, Maud Tsassis, said: “Sailing is deeply woven into Mount Gay’s DNA – from our origins in Barbados, where rum was first shaped by ocean voyages, to our longstanding presence at regattas around the world.

“Our continued support of Cowes Week and other iconic UK sailing events reflects our commitment to this vibrant community”.

Chair of Cowes Week Limited, Bob Trimble, added: “We are delighted to continue our relationship with Mount Gay Rum, a brand truly synonymous with sailing regattas worldwide.”

First held in 1826, Cowes Week is the world’s largest sailing regatta of its kind, welcoming around 800 yachts competing across up to 40 classes, with thousands of competitors ranging from weekend sailors to Olympic medalists and World Champions.
