Orkney hotel opportunity offers stunning scenery and fascinating history

A hotelier with an interest in Orkney, the Second World War – or both – may well want to take a look at The Sands Hotel on Burray.

The four-star, eight-bedroom hotel overlooks one of the famous Churchill Barriers – the causeways linking several of the Orkney Islands, which were originally constructed to protect Scapa Flow from German U-Boats during the Second World War.

Churchill, then first lord of the admiralty, ordered the construction of the barriers after a U-Boat infiltrated Scapa Flow in 1939 and torpedoed British battleship HMS Royal Oak, with the loss of more than 800 lives.

The Sands Hotel includes a bar and restaurant and two-bedroom, semi-detached staff house.

Selling agent Graham + Sibbald reports that the business currently enjoys a turnover of £720,000. In a statement the current owners said the hotel’s “hard working team and loyal customer base make The Sands a real hub of the Burray community”.

“Now, after ten years and looking towards retirement, we have made the heartfelt decision to offer The Sands for sale in the hope to find a new custodian who will continue to cherish and develop this unique property.

“We believe the The Sands has a bright future ahead and that the right new owner will find not only a thriving business but also a rich and rewarding lifestyle on Orkney.”

Offers around £750,000 are sought for the hotel, with offers over £150,000 for the cottage.
