Japanese soul + English spirit

TRADITIONAL Japanese flavours form the base of a new range of spirits from Cornish distiller English Spirit.

The distiller has teamed with The Wasabi Company, which claims to be the only grower of fresh wasabi in the UK, to create the four-strong range, which includes Shiso Gin as well as Sansho Spiced Rum, Wasabi Vodka and Yuzucello (a Japanese-inflected take on limoncello).

Shiso Gin (40% ABV) has been created using the Japanese Shiso herb – a member of the mint family that is said to have a basil-like flavour, as well as Yuzu – a cross between wild citrus and sour mandarin – and Sudachi, a Japanese citrus fruit that is said to contain a peppery, herbal flavour.

Jon Old, founder of The Wasabi Company, said the new spirits “reflect the current interest there is in fine crafted English spirits and the broader, consumer trend for Japanese food and flavours”.

“We predict they will appeal to customers looking for something sophisticated and a little different.”
