Producers from across the country among global winners

The 1881 Distillery at Peebles Hydro Hotel has gained recognition for three of its gins.

SCOTTISH distillers featured prominently among the winners at the 2022 Gin Guide Awards.

The 1881 Distillery, part of Peebles Hydro Hotel in the Borders, gained recognition for three of its gins in the contest, which is said to have drawn hundreds of entries from over 30 different countries.

1881’s Hydro London Dry was named a winner in the Traditional Gin (up to 42% ABV) category, its Honours Navy Strength Gin was a winner in the High ABV (over 52% ABV) category, and 1881’s Tiffin Gin took a winner’s spot in the Spiced Gin category.

And 1881 Distillery, which was established in 2018 and named after the year in which Peebles Hydro was founded, was highly commended in the Gin Guide Awards’ Distillery of the Year category.

Meanwhile Pentland Hills Fireworks Gin from Tarbraxus Distillers in West Lothian was named the highest scoring gin overall for Scotland, and also took a winner’s spot in the Contemporary Gin (over 42% ABV) category.

North Point Distillery in Thurso and Selkirk Distillers in the Borders also secured two wins each.

North Point’s Crosskirk Bay Gin was a winner in the Traditional Gin (over 42% ABV) category, while the distillery secured a winner’s spot in the Environmental Sustainability category.

Selkirk Distillers’ Selkirk Gin was also named a winner in the Traditional Gin (over 42% ABV) category, while Selkirk’s Tilda’s Tipple took a winner’s place in the Contemporary Gin (over 42% ABV) category.

Lunun Gin, which was launched in 2019 by chef Dean Banks and is produced by Distillutions in his home town of Arbroath, was named a winner in the Contemporary Gin (up to 42% ABV) category. And Distillutions secured a second win, with Mackintosh Pineapple & Grapefruit Old Tom taking a top place in the Old Tom Gin category.

Other winners recognised in the 2022 Gin Guide Awards included GHQ gin from Lost Loch Spirits Distillery, which was named a winner in the Contemporary Gin (up to 42% ABV) category; Biggar Casked Aged Gin from The Biggar Gin Co, which was named a winner in the Aged Gin category; and both LinGin from Linlithgow Distillery and the Orkney Gin Company, which were winners in the Design & Branding category.
