A NEW modern apprenticeship in brewing has received the backing of major industry employers, including Tennent’s and Diageo.

Commissioned by Skills Development Scotland and developed by the National Skills Academy for Food and Drink, the apprenticeship will give students the chance to learn their trade on the job while working towards a SCQF Level 5 SVQ qualification.

The scheme is described as the latest step by food and drink producers to promote the sector as a career option to school leavers.

Jim Ryan, head brewer at Tennent Caledonian Breweries, which is taking on two new apprentices next month, said the traineeship “will give applicants the practical skills and industry-recognised qualification to succeed in a brewing career”.
