Wild elderberry liqueur picks up drinks award

Tom and Rebecca Chisholm of Buck and Birch accepting the award for Aelder

THE founders of wild elderberry liqueur, Aelder, came out on top at this year’s Scottish Rural Awards – taking first place in the Artisan Drink Category.

Judges are said to have described Aelder as “outstanding, showcasing unconventional Scottish ingredients and giving a real representation of our contemporary countryside”.

Launched in November 2016 by Robert Waites and Thomas Chisholm – the duo behind pop-up dining collaborative Buck and Birch – Aelder, which is hand-crafted in Dunbar, East Lothian, is described as an elderberry liqueur with a whisky base.

Co-founder Thomas Chisholm said the team is “absolutely delighted”.

“Staying true to our rural roots is so important to us, and, as foragers first and foremost, respecting the countryside around us is at the heart of everything we do,” he added.
