Portable payments can bolster efficiency

Handheld EPOS terminals are proving ever-more popular, says ACR

PORTABLE payment terminals are said to have gained considerable ground in the on-trade in recent years.

And this is hardly surprising, given the right system can help improve efficiency and sales, according to Paul Steven of ACR Retail Systems, which specialises in EPOS payment solutions for the on-trade.

He told SLTN that handheld EPOS terminals are becoming increasingly popular – and for several reasons.

“The advantage of handheld EPOS terminals is that they allow waiting staff to spend more time [interacting] with customers,” said Steven.

“As soon as the order is placed it is sent to the kitchen and the bar. No delays with discussing second drinks and desserts. Chefs no longer [have to] decipher scribbled handwriting from the waiting staff.

“Customers don’t have to go to the bar to order another drink – you go to the customer.

“Your best waiting staff will be doing what they do best.”

But for those that are yet to delve deeper into technology, Steven warned that it is crucial operators do their research before selecting a provider and a system to work with.

He said it “is essential that the operator does their homework and makes sure they are purchasing the correct system”.

And when selecting a system there are “several factors” for operators to consider, said Steven.

These include:

Purchasing – who am I purchasing this EPOS system from? Are they a credible company?

Do they have good after-sales service? How many qualified EPOS technicians do they have dedicated to after sales support? Is seven day support offered?

References – always ask for references of sites where the EPOS systems in question have been installed.
