Ales set sail for new test

The festival launched at Pear Tree House on March 31.

THREE casks of ale have taken to the high seas as part of an experiment for the 30 Days of IPA festival in Edinburgh.

Organisers of the event, which takes place throughout April, have sent IPA from three local breweries – Tryst, Caledonian and Barney’s – to sea for two months in a bid to recreate the sea journeys between Britain and India which are credited with creating India Pale Ale as we know it; the rocking motion of the ships, changeable temperature and salty air are said to have mellowed the strong, bitter ales.
Casks of the three ales have also been kept on dry land during the two months and all six versions of the IPA will be tasted at the event on April 25.
